The relationship of water resources to food security in Libya

Abstract


Water and food are among the basic human needs, as it is difficult for a person to live without them. Food depends on the availability of water, which means that there is a strong link between water availability and water security. Libya is located within the arid and semi-arid climate regions, (more than 80% of the country is desert) characterized by scarcity and scarcity of water resources. And if we take into account the current water situationAnd the depletion of water resources, which led to a deficit in the water balance, especially in the northern regions of the country, which resulted in a continuous decline in water levels exceeding 2.5 meters annually in areas of intensive exploitation, and a deterioration in the quality of water due to the encroachment of sea water towards land along the stretch of the strip. Coastal, in addition to pollution that will contribute to reducing the volumeAvailable fresh water, and the demand for water is constantly increasing, and agriculture (food production) is the largest consumer of water. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare national plans and policies that pursue the link between water resources and food security to achieve sustainable development for the sake of life on this earth.
